Coromandel: de toerist uithangen in het Driving Creek Railway treintje

Na Otorohanga zijn Rick en ik doorgereden naar de Coromandel. Een prachtig natuurgebied, niet zover rijden van Auckland vandaan. De Coromandel beslaat een groot gebied en wij stopten uiteindelijk in Coromandel Town waar we een knus huisje op een prachtige bestemming hadden geboekt. Het was namelijk een huisje aan het strand (al was het natuurlijk nog wel te koud om de zee in te gaan, want: winter).

Hoe leuk trouwens, deze brievenbussen aan het einde van de straat:

Coromandel Town is in de winter een rustig, slaperig stadje met alleen locals. Al zal het in de zomer ongetwijfeld een bruisende plek zijn. Met de ferry vanuit Auckland doe je er zo’n tweeënhalf uur over om hier te komen, dus ik hoop ergens in oktober of november een keer terug te kunnen.

Anyway, in de titel van deze blogpost had ik het al over de Driving Creek: een treintje dat de berg opgaat.

Zoals je natuurlijk wel begrijpt gingen Rick en ik natuurlijk deze über toeristische attractie in. Hoe hoger je kwam, hoe mooier het uitzicht werd.

Eenmaal boven op de berg werden we de trein uitgemieterd zodat de machinist een sigaretje kon opsteken was er de gelegenheid om het treintje uit te gaan en te genieten van het uitzicht:

Het uitzicht was adembenemend mooi, en we konden zelfs Rangitoto Island zien liggen (een eiland dat je vanuit Auckland met de ferry kan bereiken en ook vanuit de woonkamer kan ik het elke dag zien. Ik moet er nog steeds naar toe..)

Na een kwartiertje bracht de machinist ons weer naar beneden. Maar goed ook, want het was niet normaal wat voor rook er uit die trein kwam. (Sowieso dat Rick en ik over 10 jaar hiervoor bij de longarts zitten).

We maakten nog twee foto’s die natuurlijk nog niet door andere toeristen op de foto’s zijn gezet en keerden weer terug naar het huisje want het was guur die dag.

De volgende dag bleven we nog in Coromandel voor een track. Die foto’s zie je in de volgende blogpost!
