Christchurch: een stad van Street-art en wederopbouw

  • Er wonen zo’n 389.000 mensen in Christchurch
  • Op 4 september 2010 werd het centrum en de woonwijken aan de oostkant getroffen door een aardbeving van 7.1 op de schaal van richter. Een jaar later vond er op 22 februari 2011 nog een zware aardbeving plaats, 6.2 op de schaal van richter, die het leven kostte aan 185 mensen afkomstig uit 20 landen. Lees meer

Christchurch is een stad met een verhaal. Krap tien jaar geleden vond er een zware aardbeving plaats die ervoor zorgde dat de stad in puin lag. Daarna volgde er nog veel ‘mini-aardbevinkjes’ waardoor de wederopbouw van deze stad nog steeds gaande is.

Kenmerkend voor het straatbeeld van Christchurch zijn de moderne kantoorgebouwen en hippe winkels die afgewisseld worden met gebouwen die de aardbeving niet overleefd hebben:

Van verschillende backpackers hoorde ik dat Christchurch saai zou zijn: “It’s just a small city and there is not so much to do”. Ik boekte dus voor de zekerheid maar een paar nachten, maar toen ik aankwam wist ik al: dit is een stad waar ik prima wat langer kan vertoeven. Dat heb ik dus ook gedaan (en oké, ik moest ook echt wat dingen regelen zoals bijvoorbeeld een Nieuw-Zeelandse bankrekening.)

Ik boekte dus een paar nachtjes bij en heb daardoor veel van de stad kunnen zien. Zo zat New Regent Street achter mijn hostel. Een ontzettend schattig straatje met kleurrijke gevels:

Leuk aan Christchurch was dat er ook een ouderwetse tram door het centrum reed, waaronder door New Regent Street. Dat leverde een leuk plaatje op:

Christchurch is rijk aan kunst en cultuur. Zo heb ik diverse musea en galerieën bezocht en natuurlijk ben ik ook weer naar de Botanische Tuinen geweest (alweer een Botanische Tuin?!)

Zoals de titel van deze blogpost al zegt: Christchurch is niet alleen een stad van wederopbouw maar ook van Street-art. Je hoeft maar een hoek om te slaan of je komt weer een mooie muurschildering tegen. Deze stad is de natte droom van elke Street-art lover.

Een kleine stad? Ja. Daarom minder leuk? Nee. Christchurch is te mooi en te leuk om over te slaan en ik zou dit jaar nog weleens terug willen gaan.
