Akaroa: een beetje la douce France in Nieuw-Zeeland

  • In 1840 is Akaroa gesticht door een groepje Franse kolonisten. Degene die hier voornamelijk verantwoordelijk voor was, was: walvisvaarder Jean François Langlois.
  • Er wonen zo’n 700 mensen in Akaroa
  • Akaroa is Maori voor ‘Long Harbour‘ (= lange haven)

Eigenlijk is deze titel een beetje clickbait want met een beetje bedoel ik ook echt maar een beetje la douce France. Zo beginnen de straatnamen met ‘rue’ en zit er uiteraard een Franse bakker in het dorp. En daar houdt het dan ook wel mee op (of ik heb gewoon niet goed rondgekeken, dat kan ook).

Dat maakte het plaatsje er echter niet minder mooi op. Samen met twee mensen die ik in Christchurch heb ontmoet maakten we er een dagtochtje van, waarbij we regelmatig tussendoor stopten met de auto. Nieuw-Zeeland is adembenemend mooi om doorheen te rijden en dat leverde dan ook de volgende plaatjes op:
