Wellington: Lord of the Rings tour en langs WETA Workshop

Note to self: niet pas 300 jaar later een blogartikel schrijven over een tour die je hebt gedaan

Desalniettemin ga ik mijn best doen om de tour zo goed mogelijk na te vertellen. Want goed, dat was die zeker! En spam anders vooral Rick (@rickdewips op Instagram) met je vragen want die heeft waarschijnlijk meer onthouden dan ik.

Goed, de tour startte buiten Wellington. Om precies te zijn: bij rivier Anduin. Zo ziet de rivier er in de film eruit (kijk rond 2:26) en zo in het echt:

Ziet er gelijk een stuk minder spectaculair uit, toch? Vooral als je je bedenkt dat de weg 20 meter verderop ligt.

Fun fact #1: In de film zie je het gezelschap over deze rivier roeien, waaronder Sean Bean aka Boromir. Wat je misschien nog niet weet is dat Sean Bean blijkbaar niet kan roeien. Hoe hij het ook probeerde, het lukte hem niet om in een rechte lijn te roeien. Ze hebben dus een extra opnamedag moeten inlassen (à 1 miljoen euro) zodat ze ook van hem een fatsoenlijk beeld hadden waarop hij roeiend te zien is. Uiteindelijk is hij recht vooruit getrokken door een motorboot.

Fun fact #2: Zie je rechts op de foto die electriciteitsmasten? Als je goed oplet tijdens het film kijken zie je deze terug in de film. Ze zijn deze er gewoonweg vergeten uit te halen. Woeps!

Goed, we werden weer de bus ingeladen om door te rijden naar de volgende bestemming. En wel naar Isengard.

Idyllisch paadje waar Gandalf overheen rijdt? Think again. Dit is gewoon in een openbaar park.

Als je goed kijkt naar de afbeelding boven deze zie je dat de bomen gespiegeld zijn.

Fun fact #3: 70% van de film locaties speelt zich af in een openbaar park. Dit, om de kosten laag te houden.

Fun fact #4: Die brug waar Gandalf onderdoor rijdt? Bestaat ook niet. Dit is een miniatuur die gemaakt is door WETA Workshop.

En dat stukje waar Gandalf en Saruman een gezellig onderonsje met elkaar hebben? Dat ligt een paar meter verderop in hetzelfde park.

Na locatie twee gingen we alweer op weg naar locatie drie: Rivendell.

Kijk hoe leuk: Rivendell wordt aangegeven met een verkeersbord. In de film. Is Rivendell natuurlijk een betoverend mooie locatie. Nu weet je natuurlijk dat als je film locaties gaat bezoeken dat deze er nooit zo uit zullen zien zoals ze in de film zijn, maar ‘Rivendell’ maakte wel indruk op me (in het echt heet het gebied: Kaitoke Regional Park) want het was er ontzettend mooi. Niet alle foto’s zijn goed gelukt, dus geloof me maar op mijn woord.

Voordat je Rivendell binnenstapt kun je je eigen lengte nog even vergelijken met die van Frodo of Legolas:

Hier sta ik als een blij ei onder een van de poorten van Rivendell. Je zou denken dat deze van steen is, maar eigenlijk is die van een een soort kunststof. Als je erop klopt hoor je dat die hol is en van dichtbij ziet die er ook nep uit. Toch knap hoe ze dit er zo echt hebben kunnen laten uitzien.

Herinner je je nog dat Frodo een logeerpartijtje bij de elven hield in Rivendell? Dat was onderstaande locatie:

Toen Peter Jackson bijna klaar was met filmen kwam hij erachter dat hij zich helemaal niet had bezig gehouden met merchandise rondom de film. Wat hij toen deed? Hij liet Orlando Bloom aka Legolas overvliegen, liet hem een fotoshoot doen op onderstaande plek, en klaar was de merchandise. Maar dit plekje zie je helemaal niet terug in de film. Het zal Orlando Bloom verder verrotten natuurlijk, want hij werd een instant hottie nadat de eerste film uitkwam.

Helaas konden we niet lang in Rivendell blijven, want het was alweer tijd om naar de vierde film locatie te gaan. Terwijl we onderweg waren heeft de tour gids blijkbaar nog van alles verteld, maar ben ik door het wiegen van de bus in slaap gevallen.

Ik heb dus een deel gemist, maar van wat Rick me heeft verteld: de Urukhai werden gespeeld door jongemannen uit het Nieuw Zeelandse leger en dat sommige scènes hiervan zijn opgenomen in stadia. Dat vonden zij lachen natuurlijk, want hoe vaak mag je als militair nou vechten in Urukhai kostuum? Maar ik vertel het een beetje gaar hier, dus nogmaals: spam vooral Rick even.

De vierde locatie was gelijk de laatste filmlocatie van die dag. Het is de locatie waarbij de Hobbits vluchten voor de Black Riders.

Fun fact #5: Die scène waarin Frodo en zijn Hobbit vriendjes van de heuvel af donderen? Dat zijn niet de acteurs zelf. Peter Jackson is in Wellington langs verschillende karatescholen gegaan om te vragen welke karate kids bereid waren om zichzelf vrijwillig van een heuvel af te storten. Hij vond vier gewilligen die zich die dag wel een miljoen keer van die heuvel af gestort hebben (Peter Jackson staat erom bekend dat hij veel scènes opneemt, voordat hij er pas een goed vindt).

Een van die jongens besloot tijdens het opnemen van de laatste scène iets gedurfds te doen: hij gooide zichzelf head first van die heuvel af en brak daarbij zijn sleutelbeen. Hiervan is ook een referentie terug te zien in de film. Herinner je je Merry die zegt: “I think I broke something?” en dan een gebroken wortel tevoorschijn haalt? Jep, dat is de referentie naar het gebroken sleutelbeen van die jongen.

Fun fact #6: Om te ontsnappen aan de Black Riders verstoppen de Hobbits zich in een holling bij een boom. Loop je in dat bos rond, dan zie je ook een boom met daarnaast een holling, maar dit is niet de plek waar ze zich echt hebben verstopt. Het was een stukje lager, en het ziet er helemaal niet herkenbaar uit. Dat komt doordat WETA de takken en wortels heeft gemaakt en ze daar ten voor de film zijn bevestigd. In het echt heeft die boom helemaal niet zoveel takken en wortels. Helaas kon ik er niet echt goed een foto van maken, maar zie foto hieronder:

Na de vierde locatie was het tijd voor een lunch, waarna we door gereden zijn naar WETA. WETA Workshop is fantastisch! Het is een plek die sowieso iedere filmliefhebbers eens bezocht moet hebben. Ze maken de meest fantastische props en animaties.

Bij WETA mag je in verband met copyright geen foto’s maken, al was er gelukkig wel een ruimte waar dat wel mocht. Dus ik heb wel een paar foto’s, maar aangezien ze met mijn pauper mobiel zijn gemaakt, zijn ze niet van denderende kwaliteit plus WiFi doet shitty hier, dus…. deze zien jullie vast nog wel een keer.
